June 2008 Pacific Rim Prayer Emphasis:
The Minangkabau of Indonesia

“‘For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?’” Mark 8:36, NASB.

The Minangkabau originated in West Sumatra. With a population of over 5 million, they are the fourth largest ethnic group in Indonesia. The Minangkabau exercise a great deal of influence over the political and cultural landscape of Indonesia. To be Minangkabau is to be Muslim. Those who leave Islam are isolated; often times they will lose their jobs and be shunned by family.

These people are relatively successful at business. They are famous for their tradition of merantau, which translates as “going to distant areas to seek success.” Because of this value the Minangkabau can be found all over Indonesia. The Minangkabau are known for owning and operating small retail stalls and restaurants.

Minangkabau are proud of their cultural heritage. The family name and inheritance is passed down from mother to daughter. Historically, the responsibilities for the home are overseen by the uncle (the mother’s brother), but this tradition is fading in favor of the more universal pattern of the father leading the household. This is especially true of Minangkabau families living away from West Sumatra.

There are a small number of Minangkabau believers. The Jesus Film is available in the heart language. While the Minangkabau will go great distances to succeed in business, they are blind to the fact that without the LORD they are still spiritually bankrupt.

Pray that:

The matriarchs of Minangkabau families will hear and respond to the Gospel.

Many will view the Jesus film, be amazed by His sacrifice and love, and respond to His invitation to new life.

The few believers will be bold, confident in his power, and without fear of rejection of loss of family, friends or job.

God will call Christian workers to live among and share the Good News with the Minangkabau.

Dreams and visions of Jesus will be given to the Minangkabau coupled with believers interpreting the dreams and sharing the Gospel.

The Minangkabau who come to faith will be grouped with other believers and established by solid discipleship.

Rapidly reproducing Minangkabau churches will be established before the end of 2008.
