Wearing Green
“The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in From this time forth and forever.” Psalm 121:8, NASB. A few days ago Nancy* came to me asking if it was true that Betty was going to a certain beach. I confirmed that it was true. She then said, “Don’t let her take that green piece of clothing.” I knew she was referring to the stories about the Queen of the South Sea who loves the color green, and takes people who wear it, but I asked, “Why?” She said in a confidential tone, “I’ve never been there, but people say….” I assured her that we trust God because He is more powerful than the Queen of the South Sea, and we are careful not to swim where it’s dangerous. The story of Jesus calming the wind and sea came to my mind, but she was busy at that moment, so I prayed for the right timing. One morning after a couple of days of thinking about it and praying, I was prompted to share the story from Luke. I told her that as followers of Jesus we know He has more power than the spirits or nature. I told her that Jesus came for all the peoples of the world, not just for “Christians.” Anyone may choose to follow Him. She said something about “there are many prophets and we each have our own prophet.” She was nervous discussing these things and as we ended the conversation she said, “We have different beliefs, but the same aim.” I left a copy of Luke on the table and told her that she was welcome to read it anytime, as it had many interesting stories about Jesus. Even though I know that someone from her religion usually must hear the Truth many times before receiving it, my heart always aches when people are closed and do not show the slightest hint of interest. *Names changed for security reasons. Excerpt from the newsletter of a Pacific Rim worker. Pray that: Nancy and her family will become open to hear more and eventually become followers of Jesus. Pacific Rim workers will be obedient to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit to share truth with people. God will guide Christians in Last Frontier areas of the Pacific Rim to people whose hearts have been prepared to receive the Gospel. Pacific Rim is a region of the International Mission Board, SBC.
