Light in the Darkness
“Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1, NASB. Looking straight out the door of the little church building, you can see small rice fields and garden plots hemmed in by low rock walls. Stepping out of the door onto the pathway, a small harbor with moored fishing boats comes into sight. To the right of the church a tight cluster of squatting buildings appear to be half in and half out of the ground. This is Samcheonpo, a small fishing and farming village located on one of the finger-like peninsulas jutting out from the southern end of South Korea. Mountains hover in the distant northern background, and the sunny day looks peaceful and calm. But spiritually this village is dark and dreary. Shamans practice witchcraft; Buddhists worship many false gods; and a variety of cults intimidate the people. Fewer than one half of one percent (0.05 %) of the people claim to be followers of Jesus. The little church building is also home to the pastor. He and his family and eight other people comprise the total membership of his congregation. Pastor Lee asks you to join him as he prays for the lost of his community. It has been said that even a small light shines brightly when it is surrounded by darkness. Certainly, Pastor Lee and his small congregation are bright lights in a dark village. Pray that: The elderly people who meet each day in a senior citizens community center will listen and respond to the Gospel. After a life time of hard work, losses, and hopelessness, they have little time left. The deliverance of the one senior adult will be strong evidence to his friends and that his life will be an example of God’s grace, love and joy. Pastor Lee and his congregation will be living testimonies of God’s faithfulness and power. The Buddhists in the community pray long and arduous prayers to idols with no power. The Holy Spirit will protect the few believers and provide them with wisdom, courage and boldness as they witness to their lost neighbors. Pacific Rim is a region of the International Mission Board, SBC.
