Pacific Rim’s May 2006 Prayer Emphasis –
Jawa Pesisir Kulon of Indonesia

“Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to Thee for help, when I lift up my hands toward Thy holy sanctuary.” Psalm 28:2, NAS

The Jawa Pesisir Kulon people live in Indonesia in the province of West Java and number approximately 2,500,000 in population.  They are known for being an open and spontaneous people.  This is visible in their vibrant, colorful, and artistic clothing.  Their culture leans more toward Islamic culture than towards their own historical Jawa (or Javanese) culture. For them, Islam is looked at as the cultural foundation that takes precedence over the traditional Jawa cultural values which are still predominant in Central and East Jawa.

The majority of Jawa Pesisir Kulon people are fishermen or farmers. Their land is very fertile and has acres of plantations that produce coffee, sugar, tobacco, citrus fruits, and mango. However, there is also a growing industrial sector in the area where they live, and many of them are now finding work in it.

The Jawa Pesisir Kulon are also well known for their handicrafts.  Craftsmen make world-famous batik cloth as well as pottery and wood and rattan furniture. Within Indonesia, the area they live in is considered to be a tourist destination because of the many historical and sacred landmarks.

It is estimated that there are approximately 6,000 Jawa Pesisir Kulon believers.  In addition, there are a handful of Jawa Pesisir Kulon indigenous churches which many of them attend.  There are several evangelical resources available to them in their language including a Javanese translation of the Bible.

Pray that:

The Jawa Pesisir Kulon Christians would be witnesses for Christ through their words, actions, and attitudes

The indigenous churches among them would truly be used by God to spread the gospel among their people.

The indigenous churches would multiply and that there would be a church planting movement among them.

God would continue to call forth workers to work among the Jawa Pesisir Kulon.

Those working among them would remain strong in their faith, bold in their witness, and passionate about the real thing.

God would speak to the Jawa Pesisir Kulon through any means necessary.
