RSS Help Guide for the Pacific Rim Website

RSS is a new technology that is beginning to show up on many websites today.  RSS is short for 'Really Simple Syndication', and provides newsfeeds to people so that they can track news or information on websites and not necessarily need to go to the website to view the content.

We are now offering RSS feeds on our Pacific Rim website to allow you to be able to track some of our story sections.  Our newsfeeds are sent in RSS 2.0 format.  Currently, the sections that can be monitored are:

  • Pacific Rim FrontPage items (Newsflashes/New Stories/etc.)
  • Monthly Prayer Emphasis Stories
  • PacRim Stories from around our region
  • PacRim Prayer Items from around our region
  • Tsunami Zone stories from areas hit by the 2004 tsunami

Each image category has it's own button with an associated link.  Clicking on these buttons will not take you to another page, but the links associated with these buttons will allow you to access the RSS newsfeeds that will give you faster access to our stories and news.

To copy the link for a specific newsfeed, do the following:

  • In Internet Explorer, right-click on the RSS feed button that you would like to monitor, and click 'Copy Shortcut' in the menu that appears.
  • In Mozilla Firefox, right-click on the RSS feed button that you would like to monitor, and click 'Copy Link Location' in the menu that appears.

Now that you have an RSS link, what do you do with it?  Below are three options that will allow you to monitor RSS newsfeeds from our website.

  1. You can download the Yahoo! Widget Engine along with an RSS NewsReader widget to allow you to keep news and story updates on your desktop.  This program is for Windows or Mac users.
    1. To download the Yahoo! Widget Engine, click here.
    2. To download the RSS NewsReader widget, click here.
  2. A great new service called Pluck is available, and they have downloads for Windows and Mac users to be able to read RSS newsfeeds.  You will need to sign up for the free service and download the reader of your choice that will add itself to an internet browser.  It has a Microsoft Outlook-type interface that will allow you to add multiple newsfeeds and read the feeds as you would an email message.
    1. To download the Pluck RSS Reader, click here.
  3. For Windows users only, you can download an RSS reader program to be installed on your system.  The software is free and works well, but may not show images from our website properly.
    1. To download a free RSS Reader, click here.
