Before Game Boy
“We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, His power, and the wonders He has done.” Psalm 78:4, NIV. Mr. H.* was waiting for us atop the stairs to his hut when we finally arrived in his village, so I climbed up to chat for a while. One of his grandkids was visiting him, and I noticed that everywhere the boy went an intermittent buzzing sound went with him. Curious about the noise since it was far from human, I looked closer and found in his grasp one of the biggest, most colorful bugs I’ve ever seen in my life. The really unique thing about the insect was not so much its color and size, but the fact that it was on a tiny leash, fashioned from bamboo. The clever lad had made a noose on one end and slipped it carefully around the beetle’s neck. On the other end of the leash was a loop, which fit perfectly around a pencil-sized stick held in his left hand. The entire assembly allowed the captured bug the freedom to fly with a vengeance in tiny 6” circles until it is apparently overcome by vertigo. After about a 3 minute rest, though, the mini-airplane on a stick had recovered and was back to boring holes in the air again, much to the delight of the children. Such is life in a remote Asian village before Game-Boy. *Name and location obscured for security reasons among a Last Frontier area. Pray that: Pacific Rim personnel will have wisdom to enter into very different cultures to share the love of Jesus. This boy’s people group will have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel in a culturally appropriate manner. Pacific Rim is a region of the International Mission Board, SBC.
